There are many scenic flights you can take in this world, but the one from Vancouver to Bella Coola certainly ranks among the top. Flying along the spine of the Pacific Coast Mountains on Pacific Coastal Airlines, it is a breathtaking 75-minute flight. It will send you soaring, physically and spiritually, over the endless fjords, ice fields, and beautiful Great Bear Rainforest of British Columbia.
As you look out the window on your flight, you will be amazed by the abundance of glacial ice. It is a sparkling introduction to your Great Bear Nature Tour. Landing in the deep glacially carved Bella Coola wilderness valley, you are astounded from the moment your guides pick you up from the airport and whisk you away into this breathtaking natural paradise.
Grab your water gear since we’ll spend the afternoon exploring the fjords of the spirit bear rainforest. We join our local skipper for a welcome boat cruise to Eagle Rocks. Here we can view nesting bald eagles and towering mountains rising from the ocean floor. While you relax and enjoy a fine crisp wine or a cold brew on your first day away from city life, you can fully embrace the inspiring natural beauty of Bella Coola.
Rising early before your guides whisk you off to join our local bear biologist who will take you on an educational bear tour to view Grizzlies & other wildlife. You will embark on a unique river drift tour to enable viewing grizzly bears in their natural habitat. The grizzly bears this time of year come down from the high alpine and mountains to feed on spawning salmon in the rivers and side channels before winter sets in. As a result, the bears are preoccupied with feeding making it a perfect time to observe.
It is a morning of discovery. We learn from our bear guide about the magnificence of grizzly bears as we observe in their natural environment on this great bear nature tour. The resulting lessons will remain with us a long time. You drift along the river in a non-motorized boat and marvel at the view with its towering mountains. First, you see soaring bald eagles, then abundant salmon running in the waterways, and the breathtaking sites of this peaceful habitat in action.
An afternoon hike in National Geographic’ lush rainforests to discover a world of new life and ancient life. The evening will be spent at our great bear rainforest lodge for a delicious dinner and relaxation.
You are off for a wonderful four-wheel drive excursion to the alpine treasure above. There you will discover the towering peaks and cascading waterfalls that consume the spectacular valley. Your guides drive you up on rough 4×4 roads which make for a difficult passage because they are seldom traveled by anything but the elements themselves. But, the trip is worth it when you overlook the breathtaking Coast Mountain wilderness and fjords below. Incredible hikes can be experienced from up here due to your unique unexplored vantage, which journey through the alpine environment of the spirit bear rainforest.
It’s our final morning, so we’ll set off to discover some local must see’s. There is a grove of ancient cedar trees dating more than 500 years old. The giant trees of this Great Bear Rainforest Tour change your perspective of the world most of all. It is especially relevant as you prepare to return to civilization. When your guides return you to the airport for your afternoon flight to Vancouver, you will conclude your visit to the beautiful Bella Coola wilderness but probably carry the memory of it with you for a lifetime.
Location & meeting time – This tour starts in Bella Coola (QBC) and is reached via a domestic 1.15 hr scenic flight from Vancouver ( YVR) with Pacific Coastal Airlines. The tour starts around 11;00 am on Day 1.
Average cost 1 way is between 250-350 CAD. This flight is a stunning scenic flight along the spine of The Coast Mountains, and worth every cent. You’ll see vast glaciers and Ice fields, Fiords and BC’s expansive wilderness.
Location & estimated completion time – This tour completes on day 4 in the afternoon. Guests should book the later flight of 2;30 pm for departure, with Pacific Coastal Airlines to return to Vancouver. Please note we suggest guests flying internationally, to stay the night in Vancouver on this final day, to allow for bad weather/ flight delays when flying out of Bella Coola.
We recommend you stay at least 1 day in Vancouver prior to our tour departure. Vancouver is a wonderful city to explore with lots on offer in the area. You will need to spend 1 night in Vancouver before catching the domestic Pacific Coastal Airlines flight from Vancouver (YVR) – Bella Coola (QBC). We suggest booking the first flight out on the day of the tour, which usually is between 9:30 – 10:00 am.
As we will be exploring a temperate rainforest and the alpine, we suggest bringing outdoor wear for temperatures ranging between 5 C and 20 C. Oftentimes when we are waiting for wildlife, we can get chilly.
Here are a few key items to bring with you.
Rain jacket, down jacket, windproof jacket, long pants, shorts, wooly hat & gloves, merino or thermal underlayers, merino or thermal tops ( we don’t suggest cotton for activities like walks and hikes etc, only for lodge wear)
Camera , sunglasses and good pair of sturdy footwear such as hiking boots with high ankle support or good sturdy sole.

When he’s not guiding you can find him exploring remote wilderness areas or riding bikes with his kids.
